This class focuses on the writing and analytical reading skills needed to prepare for high school English. With literature as the backbone of our learning, students will learn how to identify character traits, new vocabulary, and plot structure, strengthen critical thinking, and effective communication. They will also practice research skills, how to avoid plagiarism, MLA format, and grammar (as needed). Students will demonstrate their learning and creativity through various writing pieces, two essays, short research projects, comprehension questions, vocabulary building, and two class presentations. We follow the 8th grade CA ELA standards for reading, writing, some grammar, and speaking/listening skills. We address grammar skills, as it pertains to our writing assignments. Please consider adding a grammar review curriculum if you feel this is a needed focus for your student.
