This two semester, online class focuses on the writing and analytical reading skills for high school and beyond. Using literature as our backbone of the class, students will strengthen critical thinking, effective communication skills, comprehension as we read and discuss four books together. From both literature and non-fiction articles, students will learn how to identify character traits, build vocabulary, identify figurative language, and the use of rhetoric. They will also strengthen their research skills, learn how to avoid plagiarism, MLA format, and poetry. Students will demonstrate their learning through various writing pieces, two essays, short research assignments, projects, and class presentations or speeches. We follow the CA ELA standards for high school in the areas of reading, writing, and speaking/listening skills. CA ELA standards are combined as 9th/10th as established by the state of California. We address grammar skills, as it pertains to our writing and reading assignments. Please consider adding a grammar review curriculum to your weekly schedule if you feel this is a needed focus for your student. *a-g option is offered for this class. Please indicate your desire to register your student for this option on the registration form. Parent's Role In The Class: Students at this age are developing their organization and time management skills, but as a mom and educator for the past 20+ years, it's also true that accountability on that side of the screen is still needed. Our biggest ask is that parents check in on their student's grade and work in Google Classroom weekly so nothing is a surprise later and helps bolster the learning experience as well as the accountability of students.
Please remember this is a semester long class. For billing purposes, though, POs should be able to be paid monthly. We are not a pay by the month vendor; our classes are semester long but must be billed monthly. See below.
